Predator One - Jonathan Maberry - 5 stars

Predator one is book #7 in the Joe Ledger series. Wow Maberry did it again! I have to say that I think these books have just gotten better and better as I read them. I am so glad that I was introduced to the fantastic writing of Jonathan Maberry.

Now since these are different cases for the DMS to solve I decided to share the synopsis of this book.
Synopsis
--
On opening day of the new baseball season a small model-kit airplane flies down from the stands and buzzes the mound, where a decorated veteran pilot is about to throw out the first ball. The toy plane is the exact replica of the one flown by the war hero. Everyone laughs, thinking it’s a prank or a publicity stunt. Until it explodes, killing dozens.

Seconds later a swarm of killer drones descend upon the picnicked crowd, each one carrying a powerful bomb. All across the country artificial intelligence drive systems in cars, commuter trains and even fighter planes go out of control. The death toll soars as the machines we depend upon every day are turned into engines of destruction.

Joe Ledger and the Department of Military Sciences go on the hunt for whoever is controlling these machines, but the every step of the way they are met with traps and shocks that strike to the very heart of the DMS. No one is safe. Nowhere is safe. Enemies old and new rise as America burns.

Joe Ledger and his team begin a desperate search for the secret to this new technology and the madmen behind it. But before they can close in the enemy virus infects Air Force One. The president is trapped aboard as the jet heads toward the heart of New York City. It has become PREDATOR ONE.

I really loved the plotline to this book and the whole series, even though it is on terrorism. I never thought I would enjoy anything about this but there is always so much action and excitement it is sure to soothe anyone's need for some adrenalin rushing adventure, and this book was no different. The action and excitement never let up for a second. I was glued to the pages, and so very engaged I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the story while sitting there on the edge of my seat, literally.

The characters of course are always my favorite part of this series and really any of Maberry's writing in general. The characters just develop so well throughout the series that they are always a joy to read about. Readers get introduced to some pretty gritty, malevolent characters as well, the ones you love to hate the most. Of course Joe and the Echo team are among my favorites, and this does include Ghost, Joe's dog. They are all so realistic to me that I feel like I am apart of their family since starting this series back in 2014. It has been awesome knowing them all.

I do find this series pretty equally plot and character driven. It is such an exciting adventure that I recommend it to just about anyone. It is truly a treat to read. I look forward to the final book in the series
Kill Switch Scheduled to be released in April this year.

SHadow Prey - John Sandford - DNF - no rating

I had to DNF this book because I just could not get into. There are several reasons why. One I just can't connect to the protagonist, Lucas Davenport. He has an attitude of nonchalance it seems, like his sh*t don't stink, he is a player, and he is as much of a criminal as the criminals are.

Also I don't enjoy that there really is not any mystery to the book. You see the crimes happen, but you already know who the culprit is. I want a mystery that holds mystery, and I get to help solve it. I just don't get that in this series so far. I will not be rating this book since I did not finish it. It is just not a series for me. I will not be going any further with this series.

Undivided - Neal Shusterman - 5 stars

This is book 4 in the Unwind Dystology and what a great wrap up to the story. WOW! I loved this whole series so much. I am so glad that I had the opportunity to enjoy this series. So very different from other dystopian series and that is why I like it so much. This one is my favorite in the series for sure.

I will just give an overall synopsis of the series so that I don't give anything away from this particular book. --The Second Civil War was fought over reproductive rights. The chilling resolution: Life is inviolable from the moment of conception until age thirteen. Between the ages of thirteen and eighteen, however, parents can have their child "unwound," whereby all of the child's organs are transplanted into different donors, so life doesn't technically end. Connor is too difficult for his parents to control. Risa, who is a ward of the state, is not enough to be kept alive. And Lev is a tithe, a child conceived and raised to be unwound. Together, they may have a chance to escape and to survive.--

This whole series is full of adventure, action and excitement. There are some rather creepy elements to this series as well, which I enjoyed a lot. This book is just as good as the 3 books that came before and it has such a great wrap up. There were several things I did not expect to happen and some made me a little unhappy as well. Great story telling with such great imagery and the writing is so fluid and is also paced very well. There are great quotes in these books as well to appreciate.

The characters grow beautifully throughout this series. You can tell the author knew exactly who is characters were and who they were meant to be. So many characters to both love an hate. I just adore Connor and Risa. They are such great characters with so much strength. I found all of the characters to be very realistic and believable. Most of them are very relatable and felt like I really got to know who they were and what their individual struggles were too.

I recommend this to any one who wants a different kind of dystopian. This one certainly surpasses all other dystopian series I have read simply because of the uniqueness of the story being told. I enjoy every page of it. I will read anything by this author now because I feel he is truly gifted.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone - Laini Taylor - Re-read - 5 stars

I read this book first as a buddy read with a couple of friends back in 2014. So I decided to do a reread of this now that I have all of the books and I felt like I need to refresh my memory with the plot and characters of the story. Wow so much I had forgotten or maybe never even absorbed in the first place. I do find that I enjoyed this reread more than when I first read the book.

In this story we have Karou who is a part of the Chimerae race, having been raised by Brimstone. Karou uses wishes freely without considering what makes them work. Brimstone continually tells her that she is foolish. She runs 'errands' for Brimstone of transporting teeth because they are essential for their survival even though Karou does not really know the use for them. She finds that she has to hide her life from her best friend, Zuzana. Soon burned handprints are found on doors(portals) everywhere and it becomes a threat to Karou and her world as she knows it. Wars rage between the Chimerae and the Seraphim. And the story goes on...

The first time I read this, the book felt like it started off a little slow and even considered putting it down. Now with this reread I did not feel that way at all. This book is chock full of great imagery and great world building, if felt as though the world just came to life. The story was very visual so I could picture myself there in Karou's shoes. The story flowed very well, it had great pacing. I can't even imagine feeling like it was too slow. I also love how poetic the author is. Plenty of passages to enjoy in this book. I also love how significant the title is to this story.

I love the characters in this story so well developed. There are quite a few characters introduced right from the beginning. And then you will meet other characters throughout the book. So there are plenty to both love and hate. My favorite of course would have to be Karou. She is such a strong character and I feel like she is pretty relatable as well. She does seem to be a little spoiled at the beginning, but she does grow well. I also really enjoyed her best friend Zuzana. She helps keep Karou grounded and focused. One other character that I found quite enjoyable is Akiva who is of the Seraphim race. I like how he is written into the story and you learn more about him as the story goes on. The character growth in the story is just amazing.

I found this book to be both character and plot driven which is always enjoyable. I look forward to the rest of this series now that I have been refreshed on this story. I recommend this to anyone really, especially those who likes YA fantasy. Beautifully written and very engaging.

Illuminae - Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff - 5 stars

Wow what an experience this book was. This book is a book that was picked for me for the Pick 5 challenge. And WOW is all I can say. This is a Science fiction which is completely out of my comfort zone and I absolutely loved this book! Right now, I can't imagine not reading it. So glad I was given the opportunity to do so.Synopsis
This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do.

This afternoon, her planet was invaded.

The year is 2575, and two rival mega corporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto an evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.

But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet's AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it's clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she'd never speak to again.

Ok so at first I thought, great a science fiction, and then I picked up the book and turned to the first page and was glued to it till I finished it. This is the great escape into the universe! This is truly my favorite book for February. The plot draws readers in right from the start, you can't help yourself because you can feel the excitement building from that first page and you know you are in for one wild ride. The world that has been built here is built with such great imagery, that it makes you forget that any other places even exists. There are great twists to the story that add so much more to the story. Readers will feel every single emotion possible while reading this book.

The Characters are just stunning. They are so well developed, so relatable, and so believable. You have strong characters, weak characters, evil and good characters, characters that are off the charts in all areas. Readers will love every one of them for what they are or who they become. A nice mix of protagonists and antagonists. The ones you love and the ones you love to hate. Of course as far as characters goes it is hard to choose one favorite out of all of them, but I have to say Kady probably is my favorite. She grows so well throughout this story. She is strong and smart, but she also has her own issues and flaws that make her very relatable.

I have to recommend this book to everyone seriously. Even if you don't like Sci-fi I can guarantee you will love this story. Beautifully written and so entertaining. It is so worth trying it out. If I could rate this higher than a 5 I definitely would.

Trouble in Paradise - Robert B. Parker - 3 stars

This is the second installment to the Jesse Stone series and also part of my series-a-thon for this year. So I want to stay on top of the series and read them when I can. I did enjoy this one more than the first one, but still not quite up to the 4 star rating.
Synopsis
I will give the synopsis on this book since the cases do not carry over from one book to the next.
Robert Parker's Trouble in Paradise imagines an old-fashioned tough guys' world where most of the women are summed up by their figures and the men are measured by their ability to intimidate. Chief Jesse Stone of Paradise, Massachusetts, is Parker's hero again in this sequel to Night Passage. When he's not thinking about what his girlfriends look like under their clothes, Stone's touring his beat, hanging out at the Gray Gull Hotel bar to get intelligence on local thugs, or interrogating teens about their destructive pranks. But he has a vulnerable side, too, and Parker adds new layers of depth and complexity to his latest series character. Jesse's still reeling from his divorce. He and his ex-wife, Jenn, are not entirely ready to let go. In fact, Jenn has followed Jesse east from L.A. and is suffering in the Boston climate as one of the anchors on the local news. Romance with Jenn is further complicated by Jesse's ongoing attraction to attorney Abby Taylor and his emerging relationship with realtor Marcy Campbell.
Jesse's domestic troubles are gradually overshadowed, however, when ex-con Jimmy Macklin arrives in town. Macklin plans to pull "the mother of all stickups" on the ritzy Stiles Island in Paradise Harbor. He has figured out that the Stiles Island bridge, with its underpinning of utility cables and pipes, is a veritable lifeline to the mainland, and he's gathered a rogues' gallery of professional crooks and killers to help him take the bridge and make the island into a thieves' paradise. The one problem: Macklin never figured that Paradise, Massachusetts, would have a police chief as tough and resourceful as Jesse Stone.

The plot was ok with this book, it just did not blow me away is all. One of the things I do really like about the Author's writing style is his use of dialogue in his books. There is rarely a page with no dialogue and it keeps the pace of the book very upbeat and I love that because it keeps the pages turning. I felt like the plot was missing some depth though. It lacked some of the excitement that I love to read in a good mystery. So I am hoping that will improve some more the further I go in the series.

The characters I really enjoy and the authors really gives his readers a good feel for them. Jesse seems to be a very confused guy in the love department and feels out of sorts with being divorced from his wife. She does not make it easy for him to let go of the relationship, so I really don't care for that. It kind of has the Will Trent feeling without the psychotics. Jesse certainly can make the ladies swoon over him while he tries to perform his duties as Police Chief. I have to say that so far this series has been pretty character driven, now if the author can get the plots going I feel like it will be an amazing series.

End of Days - Susan Ee - 5 stars

I was really excited to get ahold of this book since I loved the first 2 in the trilogy. What a wonderful wrap up to the story. I found this one to be just as exciting in not more so than the other 2 books. So glad I got to read this one. The Author is so talented with world building and character development.

I wont give a synopsis for this book since it is the third in the series. The overall story is about bad angels who came down from heaven to take residence on earth. Humans really have no chance of survival with these angels being on earth. Penryn continually fights for the humans freedoms while Raffe, one of the 'good guy' angels is steadfast by her side.

I have to say that I absolutely love the great imagery in this book/series especially when it comes to the world building itself, because readers can really get a wonderful glimpse into what the world would be like in case of an Angel Apocalypse and place themselves there in the middle of it all. There is lots of action and excitement from page one all the way to the end of the book and I love that. The book had me glued to the pages. I love how fluid it is and how easy it is to follow. I also love all of the feels that come along with this relationships between characters, especially between Raffe and Penryn. Very well done.

Of course the characters are fantastic yet again. I love Raffe so much. He is so well developed he is strong and fierce along with Penryn and her family. I love how Penryn takes control of situations that have gone awry and handles them. She is definitely a fighter and so is her sister Paige. Just beautifully done characters through and through.

I recommend this series to anyone, however this is not your fluffy YA angel story, so be aware of that. It is dark and gritty but so well worth the read, so exciting that if you don't read it, you are missing out. I will absolutely read anything else that this author puts out.

Blindsighted - Karin Slaughter - 5 stars

Wow and I was worried I would be disappointed with this book/series after reading her Will Trent series. I gotta say I was so wrong on that theory. This book starts the series out with a bang, It is nice to go back and learn a little about some of those characters we discover in the Will Trent series. Fantastic!
Synopsis
A small Georgia town erupts in panic when a young college professor is found brutally mutilated in the local diner. But it's only when town pediatrician and coroner Sara Linton does the autopsy that the full extent of the killer's twisted work becomes clear.

Sara's ex-husband, police chief Jeffrey Tolliver, leads the investigation -- a trail of terror that grows increasingly macabre when another local woman is found crucified a few days later. But he's got more than a sadistic serial killer on his hands, for the county's sole female detective, Lena Adams -- the first victim's sister -- want to serve her own justice.

But it is Sara who holds the key to finding the killer. A secret from her past could unmask the brilliantly malevolent psychopath... or mean her death.

Loved the plotline to this book. It was intense, dark and somewhat gritty. There was plenty of excitement and non stop action in this book. It seemed at the turn of every page something new was developing. I loved how everything tied together in the end and I could not stop guessing what was gonna happen next. Just a great story all round.

The characters start out well developed, and now I can see why some of them are the way the are in the Will Trent series. I am sure they will continue developing very well. I like the small town setting with small town people. The author really made them all come to life for me and I enjoyed that so very much. I look forward to reading more about them.

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys mystery with strong female leads, because Slaughter really knows how to write them. She is now among my favorite writers in this genre.
