"Since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.--Hebrews 12:1
Have you ever seen a runner slowed down by extra weight? In the Olympics, do athletes compete with backpacks strapped to them? Of course not. Skilled runners keep themselves as light as possible, wearing aerodynamic shoes, sleeveless tops, and lightweight shorts. Their aim is to remove every obstacle so they can run their race with maximum efficiency.
The author of Hebrews compares the Christian life to a runner’s race. We have the ability to make that race smoother, because the Holy Spirit faithfully reveals the things that are holding us back. We were never meant to run weighed down—sin and disobedience are what slow us. By the Spirit’s power, you can cast off anything that hinders you and press forward in your race.
