The After House - Michael Phillip Cash - 2.5 stars

I received this book from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review. I like paranormal horror books quite a bit so I was happy to discover this one. I was looking forward to a creepy story, but it was a little disappointing though in the creepy aspect. I expected so much more from this book after reading the synopsis so it ended up just being ok for me.

In this story we have Remy and her daughter who are trying to pick up the pieces after Remy's failed marriage. They move into a 300 year old historical cottage and discover that they are not the only residents of this house, then enters Eli an old whaling ship Captain who died back in the 1800's.

I thought the premise of the story was fantastic which is what drew me to it in the first place. I was however disappointed a bit in the story since I was expecting a nice creepy ghost story, but that is not at all what this book is about. The book did have a ghost and it did flow very well and was even entertaining at times, but I just felt like the synopsis was misleading. I also found the story to be somewhat predictable in parts and was not executed very well. I also was not sure if the author knew exactly what he was aiming for with this book.

I liked the characters ok, but I feel like they lacked depth. There was not much of a story on them except for Eli. The story switched back from present to past and you learn a bit more about Eli, his family and his life aboard a whaling ship, and I liked that part of the story a lot. I would have to say that Eli is probably my favorite character. I also found that a couple of other characters in the book were not really necessary to make the story work.

I am really not sure who to recommend this story too. If you like paranormal, but you don't expect a scary side to the story then this would be good for you. Because I liked Eli and his story I am pushing this rating to a 2.5 star.
